Over 2000 years ago the Greeks began using asbestos for fire blankets. Asbestos means “Inextinguishable”. Asbestos is a naturally occurring mineral fiber that is used because of its fiber strength and its heat resistance.
Due to its special properties it has been widely used in most buildings between 1950 and 1980. We now know that it is responsible for major health issues such as lung cancer, mesothelioma and asbestosis.
Asbestos has been used in over 3000 products. It can be found in insulation, floor tiles, roofing shingles, textured paints, pipes and ductwork, furnaces, fireproofing, sound proofing, and so much more. The process for its removal is called abatement and is highly regulated by the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) as well as other federal and state agencies.
